Caged and Selective Bird Feeders
The wire caging that surrounds these feeders is designed to perform multiple functions. The most important is to protect against squirrels without moving parts, levers, springs or batteries.
Selective feeders are squirrel-resistant in several ways. The size of the wire openings prevents squirrels from getting fully inside, and the diameter of the wire cage prevents the squirrels from reaching it with a paw from the outside. The feeders are equipped with a lid that prevents squirrels from lifting the top off the feeder. Many of the feeders have a wire grid bottom that's designed to let seed spilled by birds to flow through so it's not a temptation to squirrels.
Songbirds pass freely through the wire cage to feed.
